Furniture Choosing the right office furniture can be a difficult task. We want our office furniture to be functional, durable, guarantee and stylish. It has been a difficult task in the past to find office furniture that meets all of these requirements. Many companies can provide you with functional and stylish furniture, but offer you no guarantee; you would think if these companies were so confident with their products that they would offer a guarantee. In my experience if a company cannot guarantee its own product there is something to be said.

Now after a long and grueling search I have finally found an excellent resource good enough to share with you, my readers.

InterCounty has an amazing assortment of brilliant office pieces ranging from bookcases to filing cabinets. I find myself partial to the steel executive filing cabinets, they are incredibly stylish, vast color selection to work with just about any office scheme, have an anti-tilt feature (thank heavens, no more tipping) and come with a confident 15 year guarantee;  this is something you just cannot match anywhere. Finally, a company willing to back their office furniture with an excellent guarantee.

Out of the many companies I came across, I have to say this one meets all of the requirements; functionality, style, durability and most importantly guarantee.

Furniture Buying new office furniture for your business or home office can sometimes be a guessing game. The first thing that you need to do is decide exactly what you need and how that is going to fit into your budget.

If you have computers you’ll have to determine if you’re going to need computer desks as well as other office equipment. If you’re on a limited budget one of the simplest ways that you can update your office space is to just buy a new office chair and a new desk. You’ll be able to get more functionality out of the new desks that are available today, which will immediately give you more room and space for organizing your office.

If you have employees that you need to buy for you may want to see if you can get a bulk deal from manufacturers. Many times, if you’re buying two or more pieces of furniture you can get a discounted price.

Most offices are lacking in space so don’t go overboard and buy too much furniture for the amount of space that you have. Sometimes it’s better to go up in space than buy another desk or table. Use shelves to add organizational space above existing desks. You don’t want to create the potential for having your office look too cluttered.

A cluttered office can quickly become an environment where you have little incentive to work. Try to stick to furniture that is more functional than it may be appealing to the eye. Your goal is improve the usage that you get out of your office and not to decorate a designer office. This doesn’t mean that you have to buy basement bargain furniture but you should be paying more attention to function than beauty when it comes to your office furniture.

Take your time before you make your final decision by bringing home some brochures to look at and see if what you want fits into your budget.

FurnitureA good mattress can make all the difference in the world. After a good night’s sleep, you will feel rested, alert, and healthy — ready to take on the world. If this is true — and it is – then why do so many people continue to sleep on old, worn-out mattresses? Night after night, month after month, year after year… why do so many people suffer? The answer is often quite simple—many people are intimidated by the prospect of mattress shopping.

There are so many mattresses available and in so many different styles and price ranges. How to choose? The first step is to do some introductory research. Get an idea for what is available. After some basic research, you should have some idea as to what you like — and what you don’t.

Armed with this preliminary knowledge, it’s time to take a trip to the mattress store. Many local furniture and bedding stores sell mattresses. Many areas also have stand-alone mattress stores. These will have names like Mattress Giant, Mattress City, and Mattress King. These stores often have an excellent selection of mattresses. What’s more, since these stores only sell mattresses, their employees are usually well-versed in the features of each. This type of mattress store is a great place to start in your search for the perfect bed. They usually feature several different types of mattresses set up on display. Test them out. Lie down. Take a nap. Bounce a little bit—test their firmness, their resiliency.

Once you know what you’re looking for, the Internet is another option for finding a mattress store. Just make sure you factor in the cost of shipping when you are comparison-shopping. Overstock often offers mattresses at deep discounts over retail. They offer a variety of styles, from pillowtop to memory foam mattress.

With a little research and knowledge, mattress shopping can be a pleasant experience

FurnitureMini-blinds are very convenient and attractive window treatments. They typically have either vertical or horizontal slats, and are woven either from natural or synthetic reeds.

The only disadvantage they have is that they cannot be cleaned easily. Cleaning mini blinds doesn’t require strength – it requires delicate handling. The following instructions should help clarify how to clean them.

As a first step, you should vacuum-clean them while the mini blinds are still hanging on your window. This process will help to remove excess dust. Next, you should remove the mini-blinds from the window and take them either outside or to the bathroom for a wet wash.

For the liquid washing component, you will need a hose, a clothesline, a bucket and a sponge. Make a mixture of one-part water, to one-part ammonia in the bucket. Gently apply the mixture on the mini-blinds, front and back. Allow the mixture to stand on the blinds for about five minutes, after which you just hose them. Wipe the mini-blinds with a soft cloth and hang them on the clothesline to dry.

To help prevent dust buildup, rub down the mini-blinds with an anti-static dryer sheet.

The above instructions are most relevant for cleaning cloth mini blinds. However, on the other hand, if your mini blinds are made of wood, clean them like you clean any of your wood furniture.

FurnitureFrom armoires to wooden figurines to headboards and accent mirrors, home furnishings are canvases for artists around the world. Adorned with floral patterns, Asian motifs and other ethnic-inspired designs, hand-painted furniture and accessories are the must-have items of the season. “Hand-painted home furnishings are taking center stage in the home, adding a world-inspired flare and style to the overall décor,” says Gary Babcock, vice president of merchandising and fashion at Arhaus Furniture, a 23-store lifestyle retailer of fine home furnishings.

Worldly influences

Hundreds of years ago, Egyptian artisans embellished everything from tables to pottery with colorful motifs to pass on ancient fables to future generations. “We’re seeing a resurgence of these hand-painted items as consumers look to add personal style to their home with unique pieces from around the world,” says Babcock. “They’re embracing heirlooms and other richly decorated items that they see as authentic to a certain era or culture.”

Today, influences in hand-painted home furnishings are widespread, coming from as far away as the Middle East, Europe and South America. “We’ve seen a variety of items wrapped with ethnic-inspired artwork, from a sideboard with a soft, delicate floral print inspired by Eastern Europe to an Asian armoire with clean, simplistic lines and finished in black and red with the added touch of painted landscapes and pictorials,” says Babcock. “Painting styles vary from region to region. From the palate of colors to the brush stroke, every region has its own influence. The uniqueness of the hand-painted piece is reflective of the individual artist’s background, as well as their talent.”

Arhaus commissions gifted artisans from all over the world to give each hand-painted piece its own unique qualities and traits. For instance, the Sam Remo Armoire gets its charm from old world style cabinets reminiscent of those that can be found in the Italian villas of Tuscany. It features intricate, hand-painted floral accents and a distressed garnet finish achieved by applying several layers of multi-colored paints and lacquers. A matching cupboard and sideboard are adorned with the same hand-painted finish making the San Remo an exquisite collection.

Ethnic motifs

From attractive 19th-century Southwestern prints to those of Northern Sweden, there are a number of decorative motifs to choose from when incorporating elegant hand-painted pieces into the home. “Artwork with Moroccan, Indonesian and Middle Eastern influences tends to be very ornate with rich, bright colors like cinnabar red, black and bronze,” says Babcock. “If the goal is to add a vibrant color or pattern to a specific room, but you are not ready to paint the walls, try adding hand-painted pieces from one of these regions to create a focal point or accent to the room.”

To create a balanced, eclectic look with clean, ethnic-inspired collections, Babcock recommends introducing lavish hand-painted furnishings showing a variety of influences from all over the world. “It’s important to choose one piece to serve as a center piece or focal point in the room. This may be a large Venetian mirror with a handcrafted frame covered with Middle Eastern art to hang over the sofa or a grand vintage-inspired armoire with doors ornamented with lilies,” Babcock added.

Ethnic-inspired accent pieces are becoming increasingly popular, especially mixed with contemporary furnishings. According to Babcock, there are no rules to decorating with hand-painted items. “You can take an intricately painted console table like our Kartini Console and pair it with a handsome contemporary leather sofa and brushed chrome lamps. Accent the look with graphic pillows and a fur throw and you have a contemporary look full of color and texture,” says Babcock.

Endless opportunities

With ethnic-inspired hand-painted home furnishings, the opportunities are endless. Below are suggestions from Babcock and the Arhaus team of interior design consultants as to how to incorporate these one-of-a-kind pieces into your décor.

* Look for antique-looking pieces that bring a certain era or culture into the home. This adds a personal touch to your décor, and because hand-painted furniture is such a big trend, it’s becoming easier to find unique pieces with a variety of ethnic influences.

* Introduce painted furniture that brings a new element of style and color into the space, adding an eclectic look. This piece doesn’t necessary have to blend with the existing furnishings; it’s the subtle details like an accent color of paint on a coffee table duplicated in the pillows on a sofa or the beading on a lighting fixture that pull the entire look together.

* Mix more modern, contemporary styles with ethnic, antique-looking designs. For instance, take the Verona TV Cabinet by Arhaus. The doors of the cabinet are accented with clusters of hand-painted roses and vines. Pair it with a floral tapestry sofa and throw in pillows with lots of floral mixes — now that’s a refined, elegant look!

* Embrace pieces with a variety of finishes. For example, the panels of a simple armoire can be brushed with black and gold filigree accents, while the casing is a deep-waxed stain allowing the natural wood grain to show.

* Watch for this season’s decorative, hand-painted accessories like mirrors with delicate floral designs, candlesticks imprinted with Asian-inspired designs and bowls, platters and tabletop figurines to add color and interest to any room. Accessories are just another way to achieve this charming hand-painted look in your home!

FurnitureCleaning your own upholstery can be very rewarding if done properly. I will give you the knowledge and steps to take for good results on any type of fabric that you are cleaning.

If you have cotton upholstery or a cotton blend, I would strongly suggest to let a professional clean it. Cotton fabric is not easy to clean, especially for a beginner.

Here are some supplies you will need to clean your upholstery. Most of these supplies can be purchased at Home Depot, but some you will have to buy at your local “Carpet Supply Store.”

1. Wet/Dry Vacuum
2. (Very Soft) Nylon Bristle Hand Brush
3. Foaming Upholstery Shampoo
4. Haitian Cotton Shampoo (for cotton only)
5. Vinegar & Water Mix (50/50)
6. Terry Cloth Towels (white)

If you are not sure if your fabric is cotton, cut a small sample of the fabric from the bottom of the skirting and light it with a match or cigarette lighter. Once the fabric is on fire, immediately put it out with your fingers. If you notice some black soot on your fingers, you have some cotton in the fabric. If there is no soot, then it is polyester or other synthetic fibers.

For cotton, read the directions on the back of the cotton shampoo for mixing instructions. You want to put the shampoo mix in a squirt bottle and set the nozzle to a fine mist.

You will also want to do a small test area with your solution to see if the fabric is going to bleed or brown out. Spray the fabric, take your nylon brush and stroke the fabric in the same direction as the weave. Do not go against the weave, this will possibly undo the weave and make the fabric look fuzzy. Then vacuum the section you sprayed. Take your vinegar/water solution and spray the same area and vacuum again.

If you see that the fabric is not bleeding or browning after an hour or so, then you will probably be ok and can continue with your cleaning. Make sure to vacuum the fabric several times to remove as much moisture as possible. If you can clean the furniture outside in the sun, that would be best case scenario.

Use these steps to clean: Spray small area, scrub with brush, extract with vacuum, spray with vinegar and extract with vacuum. Repeat these steps until you are completely finished with the furniture.

If you are cleaning polyester or other synthetic fabrics, you will follow the same cleaning procedure, only you will use the foaming shampoo instead of the Haitian Cotton detergent.

FurnitureLeather sofas and leather sofa sets come in a diversity of colors and styles. A leather sofa is the ideal way to improve a room’s decor and they are also simple to keep clean. But furniture upholstered in leather can be one of the most luxurious furniture out there.

Today leather furnishings are existing in an amazing number of styles and price points. Certainly, the price matters. And maybe an all leather sofa priced at $700 still sounds too costly to you. But thats about what you can suppose to pay to get a leather sofa on a fairly good built frame. The value of that deal will become apparent over time.

You can get the look and feel of leather for a smaller amount of money by purchasing a sofa that is leather everywhere your body touches and matching man-made material on the sides and back. Be sure to ask your vendor for specifics on construction, leather grade and compare details at diverse price levels. A good leather furnishings investment nowadays can become tomorrows heirloom.

Choosing the true leather, means taking into consideration the flexibility and feel that works for the surroundings of your home. So I’ll try to give you as much information as possible to make sure that the living room with leather sofa you choose isn’t just the best looking, but its also the best suitable leather for you.

Some details about leather and leather sofas in particlular:

- Leather has a versatile quality and blends with any furnishing mode whether traditional or contemporary.

- Leather is a natural skin, and just like human skin, it is flexible enough to stretch and return to its original shape.

- Leather breathes. It is cool in the summer and retains warmth in the winter months.

- Leather is prestigious and gains richness and appeal over the years.

Corrected Leather: Corrected leather has been sanded to have the blemishes removed and then embossed to give it a uniform look. It also has had protective coatings applied to make it more soil resistant and have better color consistency.

Uncorrected Leather: With uncorrected leather, the best hides are selected which are more supple to the touch and will develop a beautiful patina over time. another characteristic is the romance and story that this leather tells; the natural scars, bug bites, neck wrinkles, brands and the slight difference in the shading of color on the hides will create a unique look to your furniture. This leather is not as soil resistant as corrected leather.

FurnitureUpholstered armchairs and sofas are comfortable and attractive additions to any home. When neglected, however, upholstery can quickly turn into next year’s yard sale’s featured item. Help the upholstered furniture in your dining room, living room, family room and bedroom furniture last for years and years, by getting to know the ABC’s of upholstery preventative and corrective care.
Stop Damage Before it Occurs
Protect Upholstery from: SUNLIGHT, NEWSPAPER INK, FABRIC DYES, PAINTS & POLISHES
Allow common sense to dictate what you should keep from harming your upholstered furniture. Sunlight will fade upholstery, so keep your upholstered couches, armchairs and ottomans away from the window, or else well-shaded. Put your newspaper on a coffee table or side table, to avoid ink damage to your upholstered furniture.

Other items that can cause permanent damage include dark-colored sheets and blankets, for when damp or wet, the dark dyes on these fabrics can rub off and ruin your upholstery. Finally, paints and polishes, such as nail or shoe polish, should never be used on upholstery. Make sure to cover your upholstered furniture when painting your living room, dining room, or bedrooms!
Keep it Clean!
1: Vacuum, 2: Damp-Dust, 3: Professionally Clean
Cleaning upholstered furniture is easy as 1, 2, 3. First, Vacuum as often as possible. Second, damp-dust arms and headrest areas with cleaning solution recommended by the manufacturer. Third, indulge occasionally in professional cleaning for maximum dirt and dust particle removal.

Here’s a tip for keeping your favorite chairs & couches clean: Don’t be fooled by the zippers on those cushions: the cushion covers are NOT meant to be removed and washed separately! Before you vacuum, remove the cushions. Beat them, rotate them, then vacuum them.
911 Emergency Care
Blot, scrape, vacuum. Read label, match spill with remedy.
Spills happen. The key to avoiding a permanent stain is to react in the manner most appropriate to the type of spill. For liquid spills, don’t rub the spot, BLOT. Use a fresh, clean paper towel. For food or solid spills, first lift as much of the spill as possible with a dull knife or a spoon, scraping gently towards the center. For powder or cigarette ash spills, don’t add a liquid or rub. Instead, vacuum up the spill.

When remnants of the spill still remain, use a fabric cleaner. Here are some guidelines:
Check manufacturer’s label for cleaning instructions and recommendations.
Codes on the labels are as follows:
W=water based cleaning agent;
S=water-free solvent;
WS=water based or water-free agent okay;
X=clean only by vacuuming or light brushing.
Test water or cleaning agent in a hidden area of the upholstered furniture before applying to the stain.
Be patient when applying cleaning agent. Go slowly to avoid causing a ring or spreading the stain. You may need to use several doses, blotting each time with a clean paper towel. Only blot, never rub.
Use a fan or cool blow dryer to speed up drying process, working from outer edge of spill to inner. If velvet, use a brush on fabric before it dries.
If a stain remains, call a professional cleaner.

FurnitureLarge dogs and extra large dogs require more thought and planning when owners purchase a permanent dog bed. Even though large dogs can be just as lovable as their smaller canine counterparts, they require a more complex sleeping situation than small dogs. It’s obvious that a large dog requires a large dog bed, and that an extra large dog requires an extra large dog bed. This goes without saying. But how big? And what kind of bed is best?

In this instance the answer is a function of not only the size but the breed of dog. You must measure the dog when he is fully grown, or at least have an accurate idea of what his size will be when he is fully grown. Just as with smaller dogs, you have to take into account your dog’s sleeping style – for example, whether he sleeps curled up in a ball or stretched out across the bed. All of these factors will help define your choice of large dog bed for your canine pal.

Placement is more of an issue with larger dogs than smaller ones. No matter how sweet and cuddly your large dog is, very few people want to share a bed with a Great Dane. And the size of the dog definitely limits the spaces available to him for sleeping. You can’t squeeze a Great Dane comfortably into a small bathroom and expect him to stay there overnight.

Large dogs tend to have a strong protective instinct, and so it is quite often the case that they sleep near the front or back doors. If your living room or family room happens to be the nearest space to one of those doors, a large bed that resembles actual furniture serves a dual purpose. First, large dog beds and extra large dog beds that mimic real furniture will keep your oversize pet off of the real furniture without making him feel deprived. And secondly, furniture type beds are actually more comfortable than a more standard round dog bed. They have pillows to rest heads and paws on and they are treated with flea and tick resistant powders to keep your dog free from those bothersome pests while he sleeps. In addition, they are sometimes filled with memory foam and gel products that conform to the musculature of the animal, which helps keep him comfortable while he sleeps.

FurnitureMoving from one place to another can be quite a traumatising experience. Moving all the heavy pieces of furniture, keeping an eye on the workers to make sure they don’t break anything, packing all your things, then unpacking them, arrange everything… these can turn out to be a heavy ordeal. But this whole moving operation could be completed without big headaches if you plan it carefully in advance. Here are a few tips you should apply whenever considering the possibility of a furniture removal operation.

The planning should start a month ahead the moving day. Start gathering all kind of necessary moving supplies like tape, boxes or rope. Get some newspapers for the breakable things if you don’t want to spend money on bubble wrap. Always make the necessary travel/transportation arrangements ahead. If you plan to move in another city far away, you should contact airlines to make the necessary arrangements. You should also call more airline companies to get the best price and the best transportation conditions.

After doing this, look for a furniture removal company. Check more furniture removal companies, as they have different price and different facilities for transportation.

But the most important thing you should be doing before moving is to arrange for your mail to be delivered to the new residence. Contact all your friends, relatives, family etc to inform them on your new address. Inform the bank and other financial institutions on your new residence details. Ask the post office to forward your mail to the new address. Look for a new doctor/dentist/vet in the new area that you are about to move into.

Two weeks before starting the furniture removal, inform your utilities companies of your change of address. And contact the utilities companies at your new residence to sign up for their services. Confirm the moving or travel arrangements and start packing all the things that can be packed in advance.

The day before the moving day, make sure you haven’t packed the moving supplies (meaning the tape or the bubble wrap). Make sure you have put the most important things (documents, checks, money or jewellery) in a bag that you will keep with you at all times.

And, during the furniture removal day, remember that losing your calm will not help. So try to stay calm, breath deep whenever an unfortunate accident (like breaking your favourite china) happens.

Good luck with your furniture removal operation!

FurnitureBuying furniture can be very expensive. After all, next to your house and your car, furniture is one of the priciest things in your home. So any time you can save money, you should! Here are some tips to buying furniture inexpensively.

Look in the Yellow Pages for a furniture wholesaler or a liquidation or discount store. Often, their furniture is as good as the kind you will get in a retail outlet, but usually cheaper because of a minor flaw (and usually you won’t notice that flaw!).

You can also buy from a furniture warehouse where the salespeople are paid by commission. Using a number of purchasing tactics you can often get it at a better deal. For example, if you buy a couch, but would really like to own a couch and a chair, ask if you could get a deal if you buy both.

Another good way to save money when you’re buying furniture is to go in toward the end of the month. Most retail companies operate on a month by month basis, measuring sales, running promotions, and introducing or winding up furniture lines on a monthly basis. At the end of the month, furniture companies may be closing out a line of furniture they are no longer looking to stock. They may be willing to give you a great deal if it’s the last one in the store and they don’t want it taking up any more room. As well, since salespeople are often paid by commission or given sales bonuses, at the end of the month they may be looking to put themselves over the top to be eligible for a reward or to make enough money to pay for the mortgage. You can take advantage of this eagerness to make a sale by showing that you want to buy, but you need a deal.

Many large furniture warehouse companies offer an in-store credit card and will give you a discount if you apply for the card when you purchase their furniture. Use this to your advantage: apply for the card, buy the furniture, get a discount, and pay off the card the next day with the money you’re going to spend in your furniture anyway.

Another money-saving option is to buy used furniture and get it reupholstered or refinished by a carpenter. Often, the cost of the furniture plus the finishing will still be cheaper than buying new furniture, and you may even be happier with the result since you are able to be more specific in the kind of furniture you’re looking for.
